A Prayer for London... and the World

By Rupert Kaye, ACT Chief Executive

Dear God,
We pray for London and the people who live, work and visit there.

Lord of Mercy,
When has a city ever been so filled with joy one day (after winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games on 6 July 2005) and then filled with so much horror and pain the next (with so many people killed, and hundreds more injured, in bomb attacks on 7 July 2005)?

Lord of Wholeness,
We pray for the victims and their families in their time of suffering. We ask that You will heal their broken hearts, troubled minds, bruised spirits and shattered bodies. Lord, comfort them and help them to come to terms with what has happened.

Lord of Hope,
We thank you for the rescue workers, medical staff and police officers. We ask You to be with them and their families at this time of stress and anxiety. Fill them with Your love and compassion. Encourage and strengthen them in all they do at this time.

Lord of Righteousness,
We ask that the UK government and people of London will not be consumed with fear and anger.
We ask that You will free them from their bitterness and human desire for revenge. Instead, fill their hearts with love and help them to find a just and peaceful way forward.

Lord of Perfect Love,
We also remember those who planned and carried out these suicide bombings. We ask that all those who plan and carry out terror attacks will turn from violence and acknowledge their sin. We ask that they will have the courage to call Your Holy Name and ask for Your forgiveness.

Lord of Renewal,
We pray that the London bomb attacks will not distract G8 leaders from their discussions this week about debt relief and aid for Africa, and the need to address climate change and take care of this planet. In fact, we ask that recent events will help politicians to overcome their petty concerns and selfish agendas. Lord, help them to see what really matters. Help them to do what is right, not what is easy or media-friendly. Help them to help the world's poorest people and to take care of Your world – bringing justice, peace, love, hope and renewal to all.

AMEN
