Linking Churches and Schools

Gillian Wood

Rating:

Gillian Wood has extensive experience not only in teaching in schools, but also in teacher union work and as Education Officer for the Free Church Federal Council. This has given her the wider perspective and rich network of contacts that clearly underpins the content of this booklet. It serves the purpose set out in the title, and serves it well.

Every church will have schools near it, and its members will have children going to these schools, but, beyond the individual interest, many of its members are aware of a wider concern for education and the life of these schools. In today's Britain, most children are more likely to encounter a committed Christian in school than anywhere else. Education needs to be higher on the agenda of many churches.

Gillian looks at the extensive range of options for such churches and opens up the way forward. She identifies many of the resources available and, in the reference section, lists organisations, websites and books that can be helpful. Personally, I would have liked to see more references to the influence a Christian can have as a school governor. But, even with this particular shortcoming, I still feel able to highly recommend this inexpensive and well-written book.
