What a joy to receive a book like this to review!

RE is one of the few subjects in school in which questions are asked of children for which words are often not eloquent enough.  We look for other ways for children to respond to some of the profound questions about “life, the universe and everything”.  Visual art is one of those great vehicles, allowing the children to respond directly with the questions and answers provided by the world faiths.

This book is a great resource for any primary teacher who wants to explore visual arts in RE.  It is a 24 page book packed with ideas for KS1, KS2 and general ideas.  The 14 page colour supplement has some examples of art work (some very moving) created by children for the “Spirited Art” competition, though a bigger selection is available on the RE Today website for subscribers.

This is a book that I will definitely give to my staff to help them be more creative in RE.  It is reassuring for the non-specialist to see that drawing and painting are appropriate responses in RE and so many of the ideas can be adapted for their own use.

Buy it and use it joyfully!
