I am reviewing three of a set of 12 Animated Stories from the Bible (those not pictured are Joseph’s Reunion and David and Goliath).
The two Joseph DVDs look back at the life of Joseph and tell the two parts to his life reasonably well. All of Pharaoh’s court has chocolate coloured characters, presumably to help emphasise the difference between the Egyptians and the Hebrews. The start of Joseph in Egypt is quite scary, as what look like lions, but are in fact cattle, keep circling round to the front of the screen; you discover afterwards these are part of Pharaoh’s dream
In David and Goliath I had problems at first trying to identify who was who, and you would need to know the story well to be able to pick out the characters for the children. Gradually names are used and then things become clearer.
The animation is colourful and realistic; I found it difficult to follow the thread of the story for the 30 minutes, so I’m sure children would become restless after a while. On the whole I would use these as back up to Bible stories told in Holiday Club, rather than in the classroom, even though the blurb on the back claims this is an "Award Winning Animation Series that brings the Bible to life".
